MED-NET Reference group on
Curriculum Innovation
This reference group aims to give an impression of different innovative initiatives in medical and health sciences curricula in Europe.
Examples may address: innovations in the program as a whole (e.g. student-centered education) or specific parts like practical clinical training or student assessment. Important initiatives running in several universities, participating in MED-NET, will be identified.
The reference group consists of Gerard Majoor, Norbert Lameire, Colette Creusy, Sergio Curtoni.
What is curriculum innovation exactly? What to do with it?
It is not the goal of MED-NET to promote specific innovative processes, but to provide general information on innovative initiatives. The group would like to be informed on such processes, which can go from implementation of public health oriented courses to open and distant learning. All members can send the group information on innovative changes in his/her faculty.

CURRICULUM INNOVATION
The objectives of this reference group are to monitor any relevant innovation in medical education within Europe, and to disseminate information on these developments to the MED-NET-members. Innovations may refer to the curriculum as a whole, or to specific parts like teaching methodologies, assessment formats or pratical clinical training.
Members of the group are: Gerard Majoor, Colette Creucy, Sergio Curtoni.
Before starting the discussion on this topic, Gerard Majoor pointed out a few general but important questions; 'What is curriculum innovation exactly?', "What can you do with it?". Furthermore he pointed out that it is not the goal of MED-NET to promote specific innovative processes, but to provide general information on innovative initiatives. During the plenary session, Jan Bulte, an invited expert, presented an example of a complete new curriculum, which was introduced in 1996 at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Nijmegen. The workshop was attended by 27 participants. It became clear that an overview of the changes in medical education, based on questionaires, is needed. Therefore it was decided to invite all MED-NET members to send information on innovative changes at their faculty, varying from the implementation of single courses to the introduction of a complete new curriculum, to Gerard Majoor(). At the same time, all available information on primarily undergraduate courses will be collected from the Internet. A number of cases will be selected for further study, i.e. members of the reference group will visit the faculty and eventually publish the results in a MED-NET monograph. It was stressed again that such a monograph should be considered as a facilitator rather than a recommendation. It was decided that the process of selecting the cases for further study, should be based upon certain important parameters, such as clinical clerkships, new disciplines, quality assessment, external influences on medical education, virtual and real mobility and/or organisation/budget. It was suggested to plan a meeting (perhaps a EuroTransmed meeting) to discuss the received information. Finally, it was suggested to raise funds to support further work in this field.
