International health

[This page has not been completed at this moment. Our apologies for the incovenience]

Increased mobility of citizens and migration of people and pathogens introduce new complexities in health care. Relevant aspects to be included in medical education have to be inventorized.

This work is coordinated bij a reference group consisting of Alberto Torres, Colette Creusy and Sjoert Willemstein.

International Health is an emerging subject in medical education in Europe and it may be defined as follows: the study of global variations in health status. The subject focuses on interdisciplinary studies of health promotion, diseases control and health service for the poor population groups of low and middle-income countries. The group will promote exchange of information and experiences of education in international health in Europe. They would like to create a discussion group, and promote teacher and student exchange regarding course modules in international health at under graduate level and they would like to link those working at post graduate level with the ongoing network TropEDeurope that presently is establishing a European Master in International Health.

INTERNATIONAL HEALTH

Increased mobility of citizens and migration of people and pathogens introduce new complexities in health care. Relevant aspects to be included in medical education have to be inventorised. The objective of the reference group is to provide a forum for the transfer of knowledge and skills in International Health through multidisciplinary training. Members of this group are: Colette Creusy, Alberto Torres and Sjoert Willemstein.

During the plenary session Alberto Torres explained the objectives of the reference group in more detail. International Health is an emerging subject in medical education in Europe. It may be defined as a study of global variations in health status. It focusses on interdisciplinary studies of health promotion, disease control and health service to poor population groups of low and middle-income countries. The group aims to promote the transfer of knowledge and skills in International Health through multidisciplinary training of teachers and students. An example of a course on International Health at the Karolinska Institute of Stockholm was presented by the invited expert H. Rosling. During the workshop it was concluded that, due to the globalisation of our western society as well as the increased mobility of people, International Health should be incorporated in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. It was suggested to conduct an inventory of current international health activities in Europe. Based on these data the reference group will provide a background document as well as a proposal on what might be developed. Finally it was decided to create a discussion group through E-mail (), based on a list of contact persons for education in international health.
