New interdisciplinary topics arising in medical education
In a society which is becoming increasingly complexed, various disciplines are influencing the traditional vocational and professional education in one area. Also in the field of medicine, new areas are increasingly important, such as (bio-)technology, ethics and palliative care (transmural health care). For centuries, medicine was limited to diseases where now we are confronted with prophylaxis, prevention and the other areas.
The activities in this field are coordinated by a reference group.
This new reference group deals with the implications of these disciplines in medical education. More specifically the group will be involved in:
(Bio)technology
(this part aims to make medical students more sensitive to technical evolution, its possibilities AND its costs (economic consequences).
Ethics
(this part aims to study the position of ethics in medical education, with special reference to the newly developed knowledge and possibilities of biotechnology and biomolecular engineering)
Palliative care
(this part aims to promote the concept of palliative care into medical education: sometimes medical doctors will have to accept that quality of life has priority above curative efforts for patients who are not curable anymore)
AIMS / OBJECTIVES of this group are:
Inventory of courses and concepts
Discussion on modalities to promote multidisciplinary topics in medical education and to implement such aspects into the basic curriculum (as obligatory courses or as optional courses)
Evaluation of the multiprofessional and multidisciplinary aspects in medical education
Collect information on specific courses in these areas

Dr. Bellet, Univ. de Bretagne Occidentale
Prof. Foroglou, Univ. de Thessaloniki
European Universities will be offered the opportunity to present their new developments, to exchange information and experiences, and to learn from each other. Also it is objected to come to or promote an increasing exchange of courses and collaborative development of European education modules in the mentioned topics
