ARTICLE III: THE THEMATIC REFERENCE GROUPS

Section 1. Areas of interest

The Thematic Reference Groups are ad-hoc committees in charge with the realisation of the objectives of MED-NET. There are three main areas of interest, i.e. (pre-)graduate education, postgraduate education and continuous education. The main emphasis of MED-NET however is on pre-graduate education.

Section 2. Duties

Each thematic reference group is co-ordinated by a chairperson, who shall be a member of the Central MED-NET Board 'qualitate qua'. 
The duties of the chairperson of a Thematic Reference Group are:

  1. To form the group out of experts form various universities and/or organisations
  2. To organise, co-ordinate and stimulate the activities of the group members
  3. To report on the progress of the group during the meetings of the MCB and at the annual MED-NET conference
  4. To assure the quality of the results achieved trough the activities of the group

The duties of a Thematic Reference Group are:

  1. To co-ordinate and/or execute all activities in the thematic field of the reference group, i.e. inquiries, projects, data collection and/or analysis 
  2. To prepare publications, reports and presentations
  3. To present its professional plans and results at the annual MED-NET conference

Section 3. Procedures

The Task Force installs the Chairpersons of the Reference Groups for staggered terms of three years each. 

  1. The Vice-chairpersons as well as the experts of the groups are selected by the Chairperson and confirmed by the Task Force. In principle everybody from a member or associated member or non-member institution may be taken into consideration as Vice-chairperson and/or expert.
  2. New Thematic Reference Groups may be proposed by each MED-NET member, and by the Advisory Board.
  3. New Thematic Reference Groups shall be installed by the Task Force on the basis of a concise description of its aims and objectives, experts involved, activity plan and time schedule, and an estimation of costs and ways of funding.
  4. Installation of such a group needs a majority decision by the Task Force. 
  5. A Thematic Reference Group is entitled to design or participate in co-operation projects between universities and/or organisations, to compose dedicated project groups and to apply for external grants. 
  6. In order to be denominated as 'MED-NET projects' such co-operation projects, however, need the approval of the Central MED-NET Board.
  7. The meeting frequency of the Reference Group is at least once per year.

Section 4. Present Thematic Reference Groups

At the start of MED-NET the following Thematic Reference Groups were installed:

  1. In the area of interest: pre-graduate education:
  • Education Survey, aiming to collect, structure and update information concerning the actual status of medical education
  • Curriculum / Education Innovation, aiming to collect and investigate cases of good practice concerned with innovation in medical curricula and medical education 
  • ECTS, aiming to promote the implementation of the European Credit Transfer System in European Medical Schools and Faculties 
  • Professionalisation of teachers, aiming to promote the status and recognition of medical teaching as a profession 
  1. In the area of interest: post-graduate education:
  • Post graduate education, aiming to collect, structure and update information concerning the actual status and developments in post graduate medical education and life long learning 
  • International Health, aiming to promote exchange of information and experiences of education in international health in Europe 
  1. In the area of interest: continuous education:
  • no reference group
