Updating medical education and international networking for curriculum development at the University of Tartu

A. Peetsalu, A. Tamm, E. Seppel (Tartu, Estonia)

Preconditions for updating subject matter in medical school; internal or external pressure for changes; willingness of administration; information concerning new trends; trained and/or motivated staff members; available resources. In the academic year of 1997/1998 the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tartu launched new curricula corresponding to the directions of the European Union.

Undergraduate study plan: the curriculum consists of the 'core' part which is obligatory for all students and forms about 80% of the total number of hours. The curriculum consists of subject blocks ending with a joint exam; the curriculum offers early contact of students with patients; several subjects are studied throughout the curriculum.

Postgraduate training: 3-5 years after MD diploma depending on the speciality; regular courses of continuous medical education.
