Distance learning: a new challenge in postgraduate medical education in Hungary
Anna Bukovinszky M.Sc., Gobor Bir, Tibor Ertl. (Pècs, Hungary)
In Hungary the Higher Education Act of 1997 empowered university medical schools to organise postgraduate medical training. The University Medical School of Pècs has established its Centre for Postgraduate Education (CPE) responsible for organising postgraduate courses for medical professionals in the region.
This raised new methodological and technical requirements for university medical schools. Our ultimate objective was to develop ñ in addition to the rather demanding traditional education a flexible but effective training system by producing modern training materials and using electronic media. We have established the computerised background of administration and logistics necessary for distance education. We have launched a multimedia development laboratory with a team experienced in developing distance education training materials. Our self-learning materials design was supported by PHARE projects.
In the OPEN DOC Project we have produced distance learning packages (self-learning books, video and multimedia) for the postgraduate training of family doctors in nine disciplines. We also created the Dr. Quiz: an Internet-based self-assessment system with several medical case histories.
In the PEP Project we have co-ordinated the adaptation of Palliative Care Multiprofessional Distance Learning Programme produced by the Centre for Medical Education at the University of Dundee.
Six written modules with study guides and four video films have been translated to Hungarian and Romanian languages. The contribution of the Romanian and Hungarian partners are a manual for tutors, a resource book and two multimedia CD-s in English, Romanian and Hungarian. At the same time the pilot tutorial training of 50 students has been taking place in Hungary and in Romania. The CPE has been connected with the training hospitals of the South-Transdanubian region through a video-conference network, which shall be developed into a nation-wide network supported by the Ministry of Health to establish a unified postgraduate medical training system.
