When empathy is necessary, but not a sufficient condition: counselling overseas medical interns

S. Chelquer Jaimovich (Jerusalem, Israel)

Correlation between psychological pressures and maladaptive professional behaviour are vastly reported by scientific literature. The importance of personal support through counselling to mitigate the stress of adjustment is generally acknowledged. Since overseas medical interns are perceived as a population with a potential high incidence of distress a programme in personal and professional counselling was developed in one of the main hospitals in Jerusalem.

Gains and limitations of this programme are presented. Implications for medical education in general are proposed.
