Anthology of presentations 4.4.

A teaching syllabus on the bases of multi subjects and European plurality.

Universities have to contribute to the necessary reform of the health care system, which appears unadapted to maintain value for money as well as efficiency for money. The mastering of health expenditure is a budget necessity. Modifications have to be carried out on means of practice of doctors and on social behaviour towards health.

The University has to face the following challenges:

  • Evaluation
  • Valorisation of clinic
  • Research for the best efficiency at the lowest cost
  • Educate the public

The medical training should include a global, individual approach and the same time a communal approach. Faculties of medicine have to promote a medicine turned towards disease and health.

Because of a rapid world-widening of the economy we discover a worsening of the economic problems in many countries and a deterioration of medical conditions. We need a co-operation of Faculties of medicine, Engineering schools, Schools of Commerce and Industries and finally Research centres on Economics. And of course a solidarity amongst Professors of Universities from different European countries.

Participants in the project are 13 Faculties of Medicine:
Humboldt-Universität Berlin; Faculty of Health Sciences Arhus; University of Cadiz; Universidad de Valladolid; Université de Bretagne Occidentale Brest; Faculté Libre de Médecine de Lille; University of Crete; University of Cagliari; Università degli Studi di Genova; Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Roma; University Hospital Lausanne; Universidad de Murcia; Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki.

And sixteen Engineering Schools:
University of Gent; Aalborg University; Enserb Bordeaux; Université Catholique de Lille; Regional Technical College Athlone; Cork Regional Technical College; University of Limerick; Technological Educational Institution of Athens; Regional Technical College Limerick; Università degli Studi di Bari; University of Cagliari; Politecnico di Milano; Università degli Studi di Modena; Universita degli Studi di Trieste; Hogeschool van Utrecht; Institut Catholique d'Arts & Métiers Lille.

As well as five Faculties of Economics:
Università di Cassino; Faculty of Economics Catania; La Sapienza Roma; Universidad Autonoma de Madrid; CRESGE - Université Catholique de Lille.

European module

"Medical Economy, Health Care, Medical Engineering in Europe"
Objectives of the teaching are to supply comparative information on the working and the regulation of care systems, and to initiate an interdisciplinary approach on the intake and the interest of the technologies in the field of health.

Study programme:
PART 1
General section
Health care systems in European countries
Epidemiology of major pathologies
Areas of present or future developments

PART 2
Development of examples of assessments concerning the use of the technology on specific pathologies.
Assessment systems in the medical economic context.
Presentation of examples.

  • Epidemiology
  • Current medical problem
  • Efficiency of the technology
  • Medical economic assessment on the technology

Second part of the course: examples on help given by technology for the treatment of a pathology or a disability.

  • Cardiovascular diseases and treatment of coronary vessel diseases
  • Hip joint prostheses for old people

Student teaching mobility
ECTS procedures
Data bases

A necessary evolution in front of the economic context:
Change the logic
Maximum  -->  Optimum
Rationing  -->  Rationalising

Conclusion

  • Fundamental role of the universities
  • A ‘sober medicine’ has to be taught (Bernard Guiraud-Chaumeil)
  • Reorientation of functioning modes and practices
