A new graduate in France: Brest University Diploma of Marine Medicine
M. Bellet, D. Carcaillet, J. Cuzon, J.D. Dewitte, P. Dorval, D. Jégaden (Brest, France)
The University of Western Brittany (Université de Bretagne Occidentale - UBO - Brest) has created this year a diploma of maritime medicine. This diploma is meant for physicians who need a specific knowledge in the maritime field. It particularly aims at medical doctors having to practice on board seagoing ships, trawlers, oceanographic and scientific vessels. At the same time, it brings complementary knowledge to occupational medicine doctors working in the maritime industry or administrations. It also aims at the coastal emergency mobile units' physicians and navy surgeons.
This diploma consists of five modules taught during three weeks a year. Any medical doctor or PhD can apply.
Discussions have just started between UBO and the University of Cadiz (Spain) for a further equivalent European Diploma based on similar programs, exchange of data, teachers and students.
