Internet assisted small group tutorials
B. Hemming, R. Monser and H. Abholz (Düsseldorf, Germany)
The course in general practice in the fifth year of medical education at Heinrich-Heine University in Düsseldorf (Germany) is divided in two hours problem-based-learning in small group tutorials every week for four months and a two week clerkship in one of the university associated GP offices. Clerkships, small group tutorials and problem-based learning are very rare instructional methods at German universities. So it is necessary to give students the opportunity to prepare themselves in a structured way, before they start with problem-based learning in these small group tutorials. This preparation has to be scientifically based and actual, topic related and multimedial.
To realise this, we use the Internet. At HH-university every student has the possibility to use the internet without any costs. Nearly all students have their own PC or can use one. At our homepage the student can click on the weekly topics of the small-group tutorials to open the related, multimedia preparation (textbook-chapters, case studies, video clips or evidence-based papers).
The small group tutorial topic "visiting patient at home" is one example. For preparation we present the students a textbook chapter, including key messages about home visits and a case study. Equipped with these key messages the students see a video clip of a home visit. After the clip they are requested to generate questions for discussion in the small group tutorial. With this structured multimedia preparation via internet we build up a knowledge.platform where problem-based- learning can be possible. In addition we can use this kind of preparation for problem- or case-based examinations in general practice.
